How long do herbs and spices last?

As a general rule, herbs and ground spices will retain freshness for about 1 year before beginning to  deteriorate. Whole spices will last up to 3 years. Always store spices and herbs in a cool, dark, dry place.

Should I keep spices in the refrigerator?

Because the refrigerator is a somewhat humid  environment, storing spices there is not recommended. The freezer is a better choice for storing large quantities of spices as long as they are kept in sealed containers.

Do you sell wholesale?

All of our bulk products (dried fruits and spices) are sold in 5 and 20-gallon sizes. The weight of each product will vary substantially between ground and whole products. Products available in ground form include  ginger, garlic, red and white onions, cayenne (red) pepper, tomato, nutmeg and anisette. Products available either whole or in slices are tomatoes, pineapple, coconut, bananas and cayenne (red) pepper. We pay shipping  for orders larger than 100lbs.

I bought garlic and onion powder at the grocery store and it's not the same. Why?

Often the product called "powder" in the grocery store is  actually a granulated product. Products listed here as powder are very fine (like powdered sugar or flour). This form is easier to mix in gravies, teas and other hot dishes and is a pure spice product. Some  manufacturers add fillers to make their granulated products pour easier and faster. We do not add anything to our spices or fruits - no preservatives, no artificial flavors or coloring and NO FILLERS are ever added to  any Jewell Spice product.

I heard that there are different types of cayenne peppers. What types of red pepper do you have and  what is so different about it?

Cayenne pepper is grown in many areas of the world. The strength or pungency of a pepper is measured in  Scoville heat units. Cayenne peppers are some of the hottest or most pungent spices available. It is not unusual to encounter cayenne peppers with Scoville heat units of between 30,000-40,000 units. Our cayenne peppers  generally are between 55,000-70,000 Scoville heat units. A table comparing the pungency of various peppers is provided below.

Is there any difference between your powder form of your cayenne pepper and the whole product in heat intensity?

The only difference between our whole dried cayenne peppers and our ground red peppers is that we remove the stems from all peppers before  they are ground. We do this to insure that you, our customer, get 100% pepper fruit. The pungency is the same for both forms.

Are your prices cheaper?

Our prices are slightly lower than other comparable retail sites offering organically grown products. However, organically grown products are higher in price than what you would expect to pay from large national  distributors who use pesticides, flavorings and add coloring to many of their spices.

Where (else) can I buy your spices?

At the present time the only place to buy Jewell Spices is from our WEB site. We are currently negotiating with national distributors who are interested in carrying our entire line under their own label. We will let  you know who and where to buy our natural, organic spices from as soon as they become available.

A friend of mine told me that all organic foods have contamination  from bugs because no pesticides are used to kill the bugs. Is this true?

There is some level of contamination in all food products. This is  particularly a problem in tropical and third world countries that have difficulty protecting their crops from mites, rodents and insects. That is why it is important to only buy products that have passed various  quantitative measures of quality established by the Food and Drug Administration. All our products are inspected by independent food testing laboratories. We far exceed the acceptable levels of  contamination for dried foods and spices. In fact, many of our reports come back with zero contamination. We achieve these exceptional results by processing, grinding and packaging our products in a "clean  room" environment.
